Handsworth Songs war die Antwort des Black Audio Film Collective (BAFC) auf die Unruhen, die im September 1985 in Handsworth, einem vor allem von Einwanderern bewohnten Vorort Birminghams ausbrachen. Schon lange schwelende Konflikte mit der lokalen Polizei, etwa aufgrund zahlreicher Verhaftungen vor allem schwarzer junger Männer, die häufig als willkürlich und unverhältnismäßig empfunden wurden (etwa in Folge der sogenannten stop and search laws), sowie zunehmende Arbeits- und Perspektivlosigkeit unter den Einwohnern von Handsworth entluden sich schließlich in gewalttätigen Zusammenstößen mit den Sicherheitsorganen und führten zu einer Eskalation der Gewalt, an deren Ende ganze Häuser in Flammen standen und zwei Menschen ihr Leben gelassen hatten, neben zahlreichen Verletzten auf beiden Seiten. Während die Regierungsoffiziellen nahezu ausnahmslos von kriminellen Handlungen sprachen und ihre Äußerungen hie und da mit Hinweisen auf die ethnische Herkunft der Aufständischen versahen, galt es für das BAFC gegenüber dieser Rhetorik eine Form zu finden, mit der die in den Medien vorherrschende Repräsentation der Unruhen im besonderen sowie von race bzw. Ethnizität im allgemeinen problematisiert und sichtbar gemacht werden konnte.

In this world a new species has evolved through the children who survived, breathing and living underwater as they did in the womb. The constellation of historical and present day episodes within the essay explores the relationship between finance, death, abstraction and language.
